When we try to be better persons, we are in an endless fight with ourselves, to try to take away the evil inclinations, and do good.
There are many tool to use, if you want to advance yourself on the path of goodness. But perhaps we should look back upon one of those first paths of goodness that the wise Zoroaster crafted. According to his ideas, being a better person was a ladder, climbing higher and higher to the realm of spirit. How is this to be understood? Well, as I see it, ethics is the ladder, spirit is the goal.
When we are torn from spirit at birth, we lose ourselves into the tiny capsule of our bodies. If we remain unaltered and uneducated. We tend to lose ourselves into the wilderness of nature. We lose our humanity and become like the beasts, fighting over scraps of territory or ways of upholding our existence.
Spiritual progress is a continuous correction of our lives and deeds. Some conservatives believe these corrections are about fighting to control or limit other persons, this is mostly wrong. Not always, but mostly. Being a conservative is about shedding the shackles of inhumanity. As one of the wise priests of Babylon once wrote.
He (the spirit on earth red.) taught them to construct cities, to found temples, to compile laws, and explained to them the principe of geometrical knowledge. He made them distinguish the seeds of the earth, and showed them how to collect the fruits; in short, he instructed them in everything which could tend to soften manners and humanize their lives. From that time, nothing material has been added by way of improvement of his instruction.
This is what it is all about, creating a life, where we can live, side by side, enjoying the boons of the earth, and use the tranquility to reunite with G-d.
G-d bless the will to shed the shackles of this life, and be one with the creator.
