I know that we now have to enter a long phase of negotiations in Iran. It’s going to be tough.
It’s going to be mostly material issues. Like nuclear enrichment, money and so on.
It’s okay, but just, don’t forget the issue that this was started on; the freedom of the Iranian people.
Let me try to expand the debate a bit.
According to Machiavelli, who was a good philosopher despite his fame that was of the cynical work, called “The Prince”.
What Machiavelli REALLY was into, was pre imperial Rome. He was essentially a fan of the Roman Republic.
So he debated the strengths and weaknesses of that system of government.
According to him, what really made the republic work for hundreds and hundreds of years, was that the freedom of the plebs, or the general public was quite broad. In that time the people were pretty coarse, as i understand it. Machiavelli didn’t like that, really, but as he said. The people recognized the TRUTH.
There were a lot of debate going back and forth, and also A LOT of disagreement. But still the republic was solid.
I think there is a certain truth in that. Right now, dissent is frowned upon in Iran. Maybe institutionalizing the debate instead?
Give the people a real voice, it will be annoying and irritating. But it will secure the long term survival of the Iranian republic.
The Iranian republic may survive this current ordeal, but there is a basic flaw in the construct of the republic. And unless this flaw is adressed, the republic won’t survive. That is the experience of most political systems.
Political systems HAVE to have a certain quality as a political construct to function.
The Roman republic survived fights with the Phoenician and the Gauls. What destroyed it was the fight with the Jews at that time, as described in the Bible.
So this is very much a comparable situation. The current republic HAS to make reforms to survive.
Just doubling down on the oppression makes g-d mad. He won’t accept it.
You can’t serve a g-d of the poor dispossessed and make a large part of the population poor and dispossessed.
It’s not easy, but it HAS to be remedied to serve g-d.
G-d bless the peace and the prosperity of the Iranian peoples. May the Middle East be prosperous and peaceful.
