So Elons poses the question; what is the idea and use of technology?
First of all; pretty well done with the new Roadster; inventive and just amazing. That is the face of progress; it happens in jumps, done by people of genius.
Like nuclear physics, that was the genius of Niels Bohr. Radio wave communication; Tesla. Precision in use of technology; Tycho Brahe and so on.
You are in pretty good company Elon. That’s well deserved.
But what is the good and the bad things of technology, and how does it work?
One of first critics of technology and modernity was the illustrious Joseph Conrad. The “best” novelist of the 20’th century.
He was a bit critical of the loss of tradition. In his time the ancient vessels of sail were put to the dustbin of man by steam rollers.
In the olden times, the sailor was man of wisdom, all of a sudden he was a servant of technology.
This points to the change in culture that happens with new tech. Like the iPad, brilliant as it is. It has made children addicts to the screen, not a good thing. The loss of free play and the lively culture of children is endangered. So much so, that we seek to limit the use of the iPad.
Steve Jobs was a reader here in the blog, so I know him a bit. He was huge humanist and an amazing person. He really tried to make the machine human.
He passed away before he could regulate his devices, that is truly a great loss for humanity.
Now, there are off cause good things connected to technology. Primarily the life quality of humans have improved as new technologies have entered. We are more well fed, healthier, entertained and less dependent on nature.
Not always better. I mean the abuse of technology is often a problem. Mass surveillance for instance, creating a digital prison to man.
Also, technology has created more and more of a distance between man and nature. People living in a concrete ghetto, with endless entertainment may never see the beauty of nature. Hear the singing of the nightingale or feel the breath of fair air against their chin. That is a true loss.
Industrialization creates a movement from countryside to city. Creating the working class. Because machines need less workers to work.
This creates these hubs of people who know not nature, but long for it. Thereby creating the motives for climate change. We miss nature.
In terms of spiritual relationships. G-d is, according to the spiritual teacher of Plato, Anaxagoras; intelligence. A dimension parallel to the atomic, materialistic realm.
Now that is the question behind artificial intelligence. Do we make a g-d?
My point of view is; ai is an advanced computer. It works just like any computer. You put in a command and the computer creates an output.
It’s not that different from the old times, where you had to be much more precise in your commands, the output was limited.
It’s just much more flexible and serves everyone.
Then the answer is quite simple as to technology. It CAN be a good thing, if we, like Mr. Jobs; remember the HUMAN.
Make technology, that truly makes a better world for humans, remembering to protect nature in the process.
G-d bless the HUMAN development of technology. May we have happiness.
